Aging-in-Place Bathroom Upgrades: Safety, Hygiene & Comfort

It’s a party in my bathroom! I don’t think most of us spend much time thinking about our bathrooms, especially our toilets, but this video might make you look at them differently.
Getting older is a beautiful and empowering experience, but it also comes with challenges, especially when it comes to our joints and mobility. I wanted to upgrade my bathroom to make it more comfortable and practical, but I didn’t want it to look like a sterile hospital room.
After trying several improvements, I found that a few simple upgrades made a huge difference in my daily routine. The biggest change? My toilet.
1. Upgrading the Toilet Height for Better Accessibility
The first major upgrade I made was replacing all of my builder-grade toilets.
We have a very tight space here, and standard toilets are usually around 14 to 16 inches high. That means every time you sit down or stand up, you’re basically doing a deep squat.
I upgraded my toilets to comfort-height models, around 18 inches off the ground. This small increase makes a huge difference because it allows me to sit down and stand up without assistance.
Many of you know, especially if you have older parents or family members with mobility issues, that getting up from a low toilet can be difficult. Adding just a few extra inches of height can reduce stress on your knees, hips, back, and joints.
For me, this has been one of the best changes I’ve made, especially on days when my knees are bothering me.
2. Installing a Smart Bidet: A Five-Star Bathroom Upgrade
I used to rely on regular toilet paper to stay clean, but honestly, it’s not the most comfortable experience, especially in winter when everything feels cold.
If you want a five-star hotel experience at home, I found the perfect solution: a smart bidet.
The installation was surprisingly simple. No electricians, no plumbers — just remove the old toilet seat, install the new bidet seat, connect the water supply and filter, and plug it in.
Now I have a bidet toilet seat with temperature control, automatic functions, and a whole new level of comfort.
Smart Features That Changed My Bathroom Experience
This bidet toilet seat has a sensor that automatically opens the lid when I walk into the bathroom. After I’m finished, the lid closes automatically.
It also features a heated water wand, and I can adjust:
- Water temperature
- Water pressure
- Seat temperature
- Drying temperature
The warm water cleaning function makes everything feel much more hygienic and comfortable.
For people who have difficulty reaching around or moving easily, this feature can be incredibly helpful. You always feel fresh and clean without extra effort.
Warm Air Drying and Gentle Comfort
Another feature I really appreciate is the built-in air dryer.
If you prefer not to use toilet paper, especially when dealing with sensitive areas, irritation, or hemorrhoids, warm air drying is a great option.
Sometimes even gentle contact can be uncomfortable. Having warm water and air drying provides a much softer experience.
It’s not just practical — it also feels luxurious.
3. Night Light Feature: A Small Detail That Makes a Big Difference
One of my favorite features is that the toilet also works as a night light.
When I wake up and need to use the bathroom at night, a soft glow comes from underneath the smart toilet seat and gently lights up the floor. This makes a toilet seat with LED lights especially helpful for nighttime bathroom visits, as there is often no need to turn on the bright overhead light.
The light changes colors, creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere. When the lid opens, the bowl also has a soft blue glow that makes nighttime use more comfortable.
Overall, this has been one of the best additions we’ve made to our bathroom, and I honestly wouldn’t want to go without it now.
4. Upgrading the Shower for More Comfort
Now let’s move on to the shower. For some people, taking a shower isn’t always easy. Joint pain, back problems, or limited mobility can make it uncomfortable. I made a few simple upgrades that helped a lot.
A Larger Adjustable Shower Head
The first upgrade was installing a new shower head. It has a larger main shower head for a comfortable shower experience, but it also has a magnetic handheld head that allows me to reach specific areas easily.
I also use it when cleaning the shower. Instead of struggling to aim the water, I can simply move the handheld head wherever I need it. Since my shower tiles go all the way to the ceiling, this makes cleaning much easier.
A Folding Shower Stool
The second upgrade was adding a folding plastic shower stool. I know there are many medical-style shower seats available, but I wanted something that could fold completely flat and blend into the bathroom when not in use.
When I need it, I can easily pull it out. For example, if I want to shave my legs, relax during a hot shower, or reach higher areas while cleaning, the stool gives me extra support.
It’s lightweight, takes up almost no space, and provides comfort when my back or joints are bothering me. Sometimes simply being able to sit in a warm shower can make a huge difference.
5. My Travel Bidet: Staying Comfortable Anywhere
I promised I would show you my travel bidet, and yes, it fits right inside my toiletry bag. It’s a simple two-piece setup. The first part is a soft silicone tube. Because it’s flexible and gentle, it won’t hurt sensitive areas like hard plastic products might.
The second part is a small silicone bottle. I believe these are often used by runners for energy gels, but it works perfectly for carrying warm water.
I simply fill it with warm water, attach the nozzle, and when I squeeze the bottle, it creates a gentle stream of water exactly where I need it. You can use a larger bottle if needed, but I like this one because it’s quiet, compact, and doesn’t make the crinkling noise that regular plastic bottles do.
How I Use It While Traveling
I take this little travel bidet with me on every trip. Sometimes I even carry it in my purse during the day.
When I use a public bathroom, I can simply fill it with water at the sink, use it, empty it, roll everything back up, and continue with my day. It’s small, convenient, and helps me feel clean wherever I am.
Final Thoughts: Comfort Doesn’t Mean Sacrificing Style
Making our bathrooms more comfortable as we get older doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice style or spend a fortune. Many of these upgrades are affordable, but they add a lot of comfort, convenience, and even a little luxury to our everyday lives.
We’ve all lived long lives, and we deserve to feel comfortable in our own homes. I want my bathroom to work better for me, and these upgrades have made a huge difference.
